International Trade Forum
Our bi-annual forums take place at Westminster and allow our exporting Members to meet with Ministers and raise any issues they may have, individually or as a group.
We are here to support Essex exporters and will help them face challenges when they arise through lobbying politicians and policy makers both in the UK and the EU.
7th November 2016 - Essex Chambers meet new International Trade minister
Members of Essex Chambers of Commerce have met with the new Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Trade, Mark Garnier MP, to brief him on their concerns and expectations following the result of this year’s referendum.
29th February 2016 - COBCOE Partnership
The meeting took place at Portcullis House in Westminster and was hosted by James Cleverly, MP for Braintree. The businesses present covered a wide range of exporters who trade with countries around the globe. They were able to hear first - hand from the Minister about the government’s thoughts on new trade arrangements arising from “Brexit” and to also put to him their concerns and the problems they face every day in dealing with export legislation and bureaucracy.
Speaking after the event, Denise Rossiter, Chief Executive of Essex Chambers of Commerce said “Supporting the county’s exporters is a key part of our activities so I was delighted that the Minister agreed to meet Chamber members at our International Trade Forum”
“We had some extremely lively but positive discussions and the Minister took on board the feedback he got from businesses about how to develop our overseas markets in the coming months and years. We are keen to do our bit to help the country’s international trade grow and will hold further meetings with the Department for International Trade later this year and next year.”
The partnership was launched formally at Essex Chambers’ biannual International Trade Forum on 29 February 2016 at Portcullis House, Westminster, hosted by the Rt. Hon Priti Patel MP, Minister of State, Department for Work and Pensions, and whose constituency is Witham in Essex. Jacqueline Minor, Head of European Commission Representation in the UK, and other Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the foreign diplomatic corps in London. The event gave business delegates and panellists the opportunity to discuss the issues being experienced by those doing business in Europe, as well as some key themes emerging around Europe’s competitiveness in a global marketplace from COBCOE’s recent research and Evolving Europe Report on EU reform for business.
23rd March 2015 – International Trade Forum with Guest Lord Livingston
Priti Patel Member of Parliament for Witham chaired the Essex Chambers of Commerce International Trade Forum with guest speaker Lord Livingston, Minister of Trade and Investment. The meeting was well attended by a number of Essex businesses including Wilkins and Son based in Tiptree.
Priti said; ‘I am delighted to have chaired the forum with Lord Livingston. With his 30 years of business experience, he is a real asset for UK Trade and Investment. This meeting was a great opportunity for many Essex based businesses to have an open dialogue with a Minister that both understands and wants to hear first-hand the issues that stop businesses expanding into different markets. ‘The Minister was very keen to highlight the work this Government has done, through its long term economic plan, to support small and medium companies in overseas markets. This includes; financial help, information based assistance and provides overseas networks which can set up ‘meet the buyer’ meetings. I believe there is a real opportunity for Essex businesses to lead the economic recovery through the exports and imports trade.’
David Burch, Director of Policy at Essex Chambers of Commerce, said “As international trade is a key part of Essex Chambers’ work we were delighted that Lord Livingston was able to join our members at our International Trade Forum and give us an extremely informative insight into the work of UK Trade and investment. The lively discussion that followed showed that everyone had found it of real benefit and we are very grateful to him for taking time to join us.”
