Cricket has long been a passion for the country, county, and our CEO, Denise Rossiter. So, when the opportunity arose to host a networking event at the home of Essex County Cricket Club in Chelmsford, Denise jumped at the chance.

Essex Chambers are proud to work closely with the Club, and this event provided the perfect opportunity to bring together our business community for an evening of meaningful networking and inspiring conversation with a very special guest speaker.

Expertly facilitated by Head of Player Liaison at the club, Arfan Akram, attendees were enthralled by an in-conversation interview with none other than the Head Coach at Essex and former Head Coach of England, Chris Silverwood.

The engaging exchange between the two professionals created a relaxed yet insightful discussion, underpinned by a shared passion for the sport they have both built their careers around. Chris shared his insights on managing people in the right way, explaining his ‘rest and rotation’ system, giving players time to breathe rather than pushing them to their limits.

He outlined his other leadership strategies including instilling a culture reliant on respect, attitude and effort for everyone at the club regardless of their role in the organisation. Stressing the importance of creating a positive environment for all.

As well as sharing his insightful take on managing people, which many in the room could take back to their own organisations. Arfan and Chris also explored his illustrious career with the success and challenges he faced heading both national and international teams.

The session was not only engaging but interactive, with attendees invited to pose their own questions. Discussions ranged from nurturing homegrown talent and supporting players’ mental wellbeing, to balancing commercial interests within a modern sporting organisation.

One topic that caught the attention of all in the room was the club’s commitment to the Essex Women’s team. Chris stressed the importance of ensuring the women’s team get the same support as their male counterparts. Officially established as a professional team in 2024, the women’s team are hungry for success and there’s promising potential with a strong future talent emerging within the county.

On a personal level, the evening held special meaning for Denise, reflecting both her passion for the sport and her commitment to creating high-quality opportunities for our members to connect and learn.

We would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Essex County Cricket Club for all their help making this evening a success and to all our attendees for joining us.
