The British high street is synonymous with iconic brands and cherished institutions. While many household names have sadly disappeared in recent years, Fenwick is a name and a legacy that has survived and thrived for over 140 years. Recently we were delighted to welcome attendees to Fenwick Colchester to experience one of the UK’s most iconic and enduring department store groups.
Guests gathered on the top floor to enjoy the sophisticated surroundings of the instore restaurant, Carluccio’s. With welcome drinks in hand, they indulged in freshly prepared Italian charcuterie boards and engaging conversations. Strong connections were forged over flavoursome focaccia and delectable arancini.
Following a warm welcome from our Client Relationship Manager, Nick Brown, attendees were treated to a fascinating insight into the Fenwick story, delivered by Hugo Fenwick, Retail Managing Director and fifth-generation member of the Fenwick family.
From the foundation of the group in 1882 by John James Fenwick, luxury and quality have been at the forefront of brand’s identity. In fact, the first item sold in the original Newcastle store was a leather handbag with a fur lining. Whilst taste and sensibilities may have changed over the last 140 years; Fenwick’s commitment to excellence has remained.
Originally focused on fashion and accessories, the business has grown into a destination department store under the stewardship of successive generations. Today, across Fenwick’s eight branches, the brand continues to adhere to its founding ethos.
Attendees experienced this ethos first-hand, from the luxurious store interiors to the attentive team and premium offerings. Hugo’s pride in his family legacy was evident, echoed by the passion and professionalism of the entire Colchester team.
What was also evident was the team’s enthusiasm for the Colchester store, which they launched in 2016 after renovating the Williams & Griffin department store. By breathing new life into what locals affectionately referred to as “Willie G’s”, they transformed the building into the cornerstone of the town’s retail offering.
We extend our sincere thanks to the entire Fenwick team for their outstanding hospitality, and to our guests for joining us for such a memorable evening.
If you’d like to experience one of our premium networking events, like the upcoming Network with Colchester City Council at the Delta Hotel Colchester event, on Tuesday 16 September, we’d love to see you there.
