Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering & Aviation Sector Insight

The Sector Now

The advanced manufacturing sector is significant in Essex, with over 40,000 people employed in over 4,000 companies. Essex has experienced considerable growth and development which can be attributed to factors such as technological advancements, innovation, and strategic investments. Recruitment remains high, with over 4,000 vacancies advertised for roles such as Engineering Technicians and Mechanical Engineers in the past year (to Summer 2025). Top recruiters include BAE Systems, Raytheon Technologies, Ringway Jacobs, Essex County Council and the NHS. As well as prominent names such as Ford Motor Company and Teledyne e2v, the sector locally is also made up of smaller SMEs. As well as engineering roles, these companies offer roles in areas such as finance, marketing and project management. There is also a clear link with sectors such as construction.

Essex’s advanced manufacturing industry has benefited from cutting-edge technologies. Automation, data analytics, and precision engineering have revolutionised production processes, leading to increased efficiency and quality. The integration of Industry 4.0 principle and smart factories has further accelerated growth. The sector includes industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, with a focus on high-value, precision-engineered products and components, catering to both domestic and international markets.

Nationally

Advanced manufacturing is one of the 8 growth driving sectors identified in the government’s Industrial strategy. The sector in the UK is one of the largest in the world and Essex is an important part of this. There is a focus on the digitisation and decarbonisation of the sector and harnessing AI. The government has set out plans ‘to seize new commercial opportunities and double annual business investment in the sector, giving UK firms an edge in 6 advanced manufacturing industries of the future (advanced materials, aerospace, agri-tech, automotive, batteries and space), to drive growth across the UK.’ You can find out more about plans in the links on these pages.

The Sector & Growth for Essex

Advanced manufacturing will continue to be important in Essex given its strategic location near London and major transportation hubs which have made it an attractive destination for both domestic and international investors. Engineering is also closely tied to the development, maintenance and expansion of ports and airports, including Freeport East, Thames Freeport, Stansted and Southend Airports. A considerable number of nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs) are also taking place in Essex, which will drive demand for the sector. These include the Lower Thames Crossing, A12 Widening, Five Estuaries Offshore Wind Farm and Longfield Solar Energy Farm. Such developments also help to illustrate the crucial role of public and private investments for the sector and the broader impact this has in attracting businesses to the region.

Collaboration will also remain key to driving innovation and growth. These include those between academia, and government institutions to help drive innovation and research. Knowledge transfer initiatives are also important in facilitating the transfer of cutting-edge technologies and expertise. Business incubators, innovation hubs and facilities and networking opportunities also continue to support the sector and facilitate growth and innovation. Aspects such as reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions are increasingly important and the sector is incorporating sustainability practices and technologies to minimise environmental impact.

Skills Provision & Requirements

A skilled workforce is clearly critical for the sector, and it has faced challenges in recruiting skilled people to roles. Work is already underway and there is a range of provision responding to the sector and its skills needs. Essex has various educational and training institutions offering programs and courses tailored to the needs of the manufacturing sector, including vocational training, apprenticeships, and higher education programs in engineering, technology, and related fields. A lot of institutions locally also have industry led equipment and facilities to ensure they can respond to industry demand. Examples include Harlow’s Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Centre and the Robotics Laboratory at the University of Essex. You can find out more about what’s on offer via the links on these pages.

Essential Skills for the Sector

According to a survey conducted by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), less than half of new engineering recruits possess the necessary technical or soft skills required for work within the industry which illustrates their importance. Top ten specialist and essential skills advertised in vacancies over the past year (to Summer 2025) helps to illustrate what employers are looking for.
