Books, Business & Behind-the-Scenes Access at Penguin Random House

At Essex Chambers, we pride ourselves on giving our members exclusive access to some of the county’s most outstanding businesses. One such prestigious organisation is Penguin Random House.

It was fantastic to return to their distribution centre in the north of the county for a networking tour that has become a highlight of our events calendar. Attendees were excited to get a behind-the-scenes look at the scale of the operation and the work that goes into getting the latest titles onto our shelves.

Penguin is one of the most recognised brands in the world and has been a publishing powerhouse for nearly a century. With every one of their books in the UK passing through their site in Frating, it’s incredible to have such a prominent business here in Essex.

Along with the vast scale of the site, the innovative machinery and impressive automation that go into the seamless operation, what really shines through is the organisation’s dedication to its staff and customers. This was a sentiment echoed by Distribution Operations Director Neil Springall, who addressed attendees before a delicious lunch and tour.

Neil spoke about the company as a “people business”, reflected in the longevity of service from staff, many of whom have been with the company for over 20 years.

The distribution centre can house and process roughly 85 million books a year. On the day of the event, there were an impressive 39.5 million copies on the shelves, ready to be processed and delivered to clients around the world.

The Customer Service team assists a vast array of clients, from independent bookshops to high street retailers, supermarkets and major ecommerce platforms like Amazon. Each department understands the importance of building strong relationships to deliver exceptional service.
