Passengers travelling on the Greater Anglia network can now benefit from simpler, faster journeys as contactless ticketing is introduced at 20 additional stations across the network.
As of yesterday, Sunday 8 March, customers travelling between London Liverpool Street and stations across Essex and Hertfordshire can simply tap in and tap out using a contactless bank card, smartphone or smart device.
The extension now makes journeys easier for customers travelling on key commuter and airport routes into and out of London, including the Stansted Express route between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport.
Contactless ticketing allows passengers to pay for individual journeys, combining peak and off-peak fares where appropriate, with fares automatically calculated based on where and when they travel. Daily and weekly caps apply on journeys into and within London, helping customers pay the best value fare for their journeys.
“Rail ticketing is long overdue an upgrade to bring the rail network into the 21st century. Through the expansion of tap-in tap-out technology in the south east and our digital Pay As You Go (PAYG) trials in the north and east midlands, we’re making rail travel simpler and more flexible for passengers.
“As the Railways Bill moves us towards GBR, we’re delivering straightforward, stress-free travel by train across the network, supporting passengers, boosting economic growth, jobs and homes, and creating a truly integrated transport network, as we connect London’s airports by contactless PAYG.”
“Introducing contactless ticketing at these additional stations makes travelling with Greater Anglia even easier and more convenient. Customers can now simply tap in and tap out using their contactless card or device, helping make journeys quicker and more flexible.
“This will be particularly helpful for commuters and passengers travelling to and from Stansted and Southend airports, and we are pleased to see contactless ticketing now available across these key airport routes.”
The introduction of contactless ticketing at these stations forms part of a wider programme to simplify fares and ticketing across the rail industry, delivered in partnership with the Department for Transport and Transport for London.
“The ‘go live’ of contactless travel on the Stansted Express is great news for passengers and will make rail journeys between Stansted and London even more seamless, significantly improving our passengers’ experience and helping make choosing the train an even more attractive option for Londoners and overseas visitors alike.”
“Rail connectivity is a key part of our offer as an easy, speedy, friendly major London airport, and this development makes choosing London Southend an obvious decision for customers looking for a stress-free journey from door to departure gate.
“For passengers travelling from East London and further afield, contactless payment removes the need to queue for paper tickets – they can simply tap in and go.”
Passengers are encouraged to check that contactless is available at both their departure and destination stations before travelling and to ensure they touch in and out correctly at the start and end of each journey.
