Invitation to consult on our next campaign with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), in support of their Help Great Britain Work Well strategy #HelpGBWorkWell:

We are seeking two industry representatives to assist with a campaign on Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV). Through participation in a working group a Chamber member will be sharing their knowledge on the use of LEV which we will use to produce communication materials and share at breakfast events to deliver information. The Chamber member will be working with the HSE and LEV industry representatives over a 12 to 18 month period to deliver this campaign in early 2018. The breakfast events will be focused on the East Midlands, Lancashire and Staffordshire areas where there are many hundreds of businesses that can benefit from this work, and of course other engagement with Chambers around the country will be welcomed. All the work will be on a voluntary basis involving up to six meetings in the Midlands or Northwest.  Note that the working group members will not be paid for their work or refunded for any expenses incurred when attending the meetings.

The aim of the campaign is to create greater awareness of the harm from breathing in harmful substances and how they can be controlled. Ultimately this work is about ensuring that businesses – especially SMEs – know how to take the right actions easily and efficiently to install and use Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) equipment. The campaign will target directors, managers and supervisors to help them identify risks and make the right decisions in the selection and use of LEV as an effective control.

Exposures to harmful substances lead to an estimated 13,000 deaths annually. Dusts such as flour, wood and stone and other airborne fume, mist and gases can lead to cancer and other long latency diseases. The everyday work activities that can cause exposure and how they can be controlled will be the focus of the campaign. The overall aim is to raise awareness of how Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) can be used to control these risks.

If you are interested in participating then please e-mail healthandsafety@essexchambers.co.uk by Friday 3rd February. We will be appointing working group members early February for a first meeting in early March 2017.
