Why you need to know about Data Protection and how to protect the personal data you hold on your staff and your customers

In May 2018 the United Kingdom completed implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), one of the largest changes to the standards on how Personal Data is managed. Although the GDPR is a piece of European Union (EU) legislation it has now been adopted into UK law via the Data Protection Act 2018 and will continue to apply directly to anyone using EU citizen data.

Each and every business has an interest and need in collecting, using and maintaining good value data on customers and staff. However, this is often an area that becomes neglected leading to poor data quality, intrusions into people’s private lives or security threats to you and your business.

There are a lot of myths out there about what Data Protection requires and how it restricts what businesses can and cannot do with Personal Data.

Lighthouse Information Governance are experienced practitioners in how to collect, use and manage information and data. Through 2019 they are delivering a series of workshops with the Essex Chambers of Commerce that consist of the core elements and skills under Data Protection. These include;

•    When and how to collect consent for using personal data
•    How to spot and investigate a security breach
•    How to respond to and manage a request for personal data
•    What enforcement powers exist, and how to avoid getting into regulatory trouble
•    How to work with and manage your suppliers and third parties

These briefings will assist you with practical skills on how to manage Personal Data so that you can cut through the myths and nonsense surrounding Data Protection and ensure the personal data you have on your staff and/or customers is as accurate, proportionate, secure and valuable as possible. You’ll leave with skills, guidance, links to relevant tools and resources and some confidence on how to be data aware in order to support and encourage your businesses to be the same.
